Drumming info: My usual drum setup for recording is a vintage Premier birch wood kit with a 20 x 14 kick drum, 12 x 8 rack tom and 16 x 16 floor tom. Sometimes I use a larger 24 x 14 kick drum of the same make and series. My main snare drum is a Sonor D505 14 x 5.75 seamless steel shell and my side snare is a Pearl 13 x 3 maple piccolo. Having tested out different shell types (woods, metals) and sizes, this particular setup suits my live room best for most situations. I also have a Sonor Phonic beech wood kit with a 22 x 14 kick, 13 x 9 and 14 x 10 rack toms, 16 x 16 floor tom plus additional drums and percussion to hand. I play Remo heads. I may combine drums or have separate A and B kits set up, it all depends. My cymbals have been selected for their versatility and tonality and cover a range of styles. I use Paiste 13″ Dark Signature hi-hats, a 20” Giant Beat crash, 20” 2002 ride and 18” Sabian Paragon crash, plus other cymbal types and sizes.

Recording info: 24 Bit 48 kHz, 16 channel drum recording. Tracking is via a MOTU 896/8PRE to disk, with file prep and rendering completed in my DAW. I use AKG, Sennheiser, Shure and Rode microphones. If you want live drums recorded for your project I can help. All I need is a guide mix (mp3) with the BPM (or a tempo map) plus reference tracks. When everything’s done you’ll get a full, broadcast quality sound with no issues. Mic placements provide optimal capture with minimal signal bleed, the levels are balanced and the polarity and phase relationships are coherent. You can have a single stereo mix, mix stems or multitracks. Mix stems are mono and stereo sub-mixes, so it could mean mono kick & snare with stereo toms, overheads & room; 5 files in total. Multitracks means all 16 tracks separately: 12 x mono – kick in/out/sub; snare top/bottom; hi-hat; rack/floor toms; side snare; overhead front/back; room AND 2 x stereo – overheads & room mics.
